Building a rental home on the coast of Ecuador! Week 9

In case you missed it, here is work week #8

WEEK #9 MAY 27-31, 2013

In week #8 the bricklayers were just starting to lay some of the bricks for the walls. This week we are going to see further progress on the bricks for the walls and some rough plumbing and electrical work done.
The work week begins with some bricks being put up and a dull colored coating being put on the roof. The mixture brushed on consists of a special water proof sealant that prevents cracking and seals the cement to help guarantee that the roof will not leak. This is a special application and costs more money then traditionally not doing anything. I feel that the 5 year guarantee of the product application is well worth it. The sealant must be reapplied every 5 years.

The bamboo poles were taken down and piled near the rental house to be later loaded and hauled away. The poles needed to stay up for 30 days to support the cement roof allowing the time for the roof to cure and settle. I was surprised to see that there was not even one crack in the ceiling. The bamboo poles can be used 3 or 4 times for this purpose if the ceiling height is correct and after that they are discarded.

In the picture below you see some of the rough plumbing for the rental house. This is the outside connection for the bathroom sewage pipe, and a roughed in electrical socket that will be an outdoor plug. The sewage pipe will be connected to a biodigester septic system.

By the end of the week the workers had nearly all of the bricks in place and the frame made for the windows so they could place the bricks around the frame. A bamboo pole was also dug in temporarily that will run the electricity line to provide power for the workers during construction. This concludes the construction for week #9 on building a rental home on the coast of Ecuador.

Stay tuned for week #10 real soon!
